labour of love

Project for the past 3 months - a counter top display.

One thing comes to mind - it must be SIMPLE in design, it must conform with the concept of takui.  Nothing fancy, no colourful graphics... I want to showcase the beautiful colors of takui bags.  Natural, unbleached material... something that is well-made; so it will be "reused" again and not end up in the landfill as most corrugated card box displays would be.  I want to give my retailers this gift for supporting me since the start, I want to thank them.  I hand-made the display one by one, from planing the birch to sanding, making the joints and etc.  Somehow, I find the process, meditating.  I enjoy every minute of it.  It is a labour of love.  Every bento display is slightly different, each has its own character, whether it is the knots from each individual piece of birch, or the joints - it has to be made to measure.

ps.  the lid actually slides into the box to make the backdrop of countertop display.  Received many compliments.  I hope you like it too.

what is takui?

"Takui" stands for simplicity.  If you own a takui bag, you know that it is a very functional item with simple design in mind.  Lots of thoughts to make sure the handles are more durable, much easier on the hand when carrying weights... therefore, we construct the bag with just ONE piece of fabric, running seamlessly at the handles.  We know, you will appreciate our thoughtfulness.

"Takui" also stands for familiarity.  Takui bag celebrates the traditional shape of a plastic bag; something that is so familiar to all of us.  It is easy to understand, easy to use.

"Takui" strives for being your better alternative, a better alternative that leads to a better future.  Afterall, what is the "best"?  "Best" comes with tensions....

Life is supposed to be simple and easy, and that's "Takui".

what does "green" mean?

Everyday, a slew of articles, news stories etc come out about being green, saving the earth, saving ourselves.

This one deserves a second look. How Green Is My Bottle? does a lifecycle assessment on the now ubiquitous steel water bottle.

Which is more green, the stainless steel water bottle or a plastic water bottle?

The answer would seem obvious but it is not.

An “expensive” item that is used over and over again will more than cover the cost (and impacts) of the less expensive option (in terms of environmental impact) that is only used once. If you are only going to drink water once, plastic is your choice. That may seem a little ridiculous, but think about it.

The end user, the individual, is an important part of the equation. Whether something is organic, natural, made or not made from recycled materials, the item itself will not make you any more virtuous necessarily. You may feel better about yourself but how you use something and how often is almost more important.

Just a few things to consider when you go shopping next….

simple and functional: +-0 humidifier

I'm searching for a shared sense, one that should already exist. To use a metaphor, it's something akin to the gaps in a jigsaw puzzle, but which is not one-dimensional. It's like the gaps within a set of nested boxes, into which time, space, action, customs, culture, information, education and thought have all been poured. I believe that finding these gaps means looking not at people or objects themselves, but rather at the space around them or their outlines. I don't like the idea of forcibly changing the shapes of things under the guise of "creation".  - Naoto Fukasawa

When it comes to design, Naoto Fukasawa is truly inspirational.  The world renown industrial designer is the master of exquisite functional design which earns him over 40 awards in his career.  Every product design is around the concept of simplicity, yet undeniably elegant.  Purchased at 0101 in Shibuya, the +-0 humidifier ver. 3 is a piece of sculpture.  Some say it looks like a donut, but I see a pure drop of liquid hitting a calm surface of water, creating that "hole" at contact.  Maybe that is why the product is water-related, preserving the shape of water... celebrating the form.

Takui bag is definitely inspired by Fukasawa design principle.  It is a simple bag, but it takes many tries to make sure the bag handles are constructed seamlessly, allowing for better weight distribution.  Careful selection of material to ensure quality, durability and usability.  We want to put design emphasis on the form and functionality rather than the design of prints.  Takui bags are meant for everyone, because everyone has the responsibility of contributing to a greener world.

simple living - 簡単な生活 - takui

Simple living "簡単な生活"is actually an efficiency, less Really is more.

I was obsessed in the pursuit of more:  more power, more wealth, more security, more success.  I tipped the balance of life in pursuing a career that I thought it would give me all the "more's".  These "more's" turned into more work, more stress, more frustration, more anger, less time, less health, less balance and less SELF. Before I turned 30, I had my first chest pain.  Suddenly, more became less.

Does this sound familiar to you?

Takui is merely a word, a symbol, a name representing this new concept, new vision - a vision of LESS.  But this vision of LESS will lead to a better living, better future.  Simplicity is the key.

Inspired by my study trip to Japan and the way people lived in Shirakawa-go, I want to continue exploring and sharing simple (& efficient) living tips and ideas.

My first thought comes into mind:  LESS stress = MORE health.  I am certain.

feedback from wendy t.

We are now growing our happy customers base.  Yesterday, we received an email from a customer who purchased Takui bags as Christmas gifts.  With her permission, we are putting her email on Takui blog - she has many creative ways of using Takui bags.

From Wendy T. (Toronto, Canada):

" I just wanted to give you some feedback on how I've been using your Takui bags, especially over the holidays...

  • beach bag when vacation in Hawaii (totally washable)
  • last minute extra bag to use as carry on for the plane (but might be an issue now with new security on planes)
  • shopping at the mall...many stores charge for their plastic bags now.
  • the Takui bags are so small they fit in my pocket!
  • perfect stocking stuffer
  • put housewarming gifts in them when I go visit a new home (gifts include plates, towels, candles, etc)...I give the bag away too, of course used it as a gift bag over Christmas to save on wrapping paper
  • carry my random dog stuff when I bring my dog over to someone's house (bowl, food, toys, etc)
  • great gift for new moms for their baby stuff
  • using for groceries is a given

The ideas are endless!"

We love to hear from you, your feedbacks are very valuable to us and sharing your creative use of takui bags. Please send us (info@takui.ca) pictures of how you use Takui bags and we are working on a photo album for a Takui Community.  Stay tuned!

Thanks Wendy!

stop resisting the change and learn to go with the flow

Learning to go with the flow does not mean to be a follower.  Stop resisting the change and go with the flow is a great lesson to learn and master.

Change is uncomfortable.  It is because we all try to control our lives within our prediction; creating the security and certainty.  We go to school, we graduate, then we find a good job, find a partner, get married, start a family, have kids, luckily we can afford to buy a house, hoping we can keep our good jobs for the rest of our lives, retire and die.  Does this sound familiar?

We create "comfort zones" for ourselves; as evident as the side of bed we sleep in.  Have you ever wondered why you love the left side more than the right, or the vice versa?  Is there something wrong with the other side?  The answer is no.  But it is our routine, it is our familiar ground, our turf and we have control over it.  We are COMFORTABLE.

Someone once told me:  when we try to keep things the same, we often end up holding onto people and situations that we shouldn't, and ignoring the possibilities for transformation that are presented to us.

Numerous events occurred in the past year, and they all point to breaking away from the predictable life (just like the one above).  No matter what I have done to resist the change (because I am scared), it seems that the higher power has pushed me into the same direction.  3 months ago, I decide to take the risk and leap into the unknown.  I no longer want to see fear robbing away my life.  I need to grow and challenge myself and I want to become a person that I always long to become but I just never have the time to do so (previously).  There is no better time than any time.  The longer I delay the decision, the longer I work for someone else's dream that I remotely believe in.  I will never know if I never leap.  I give up a comfortable pay cheque, I learn and become more efficient and resourceful.  Life become simpler but refreshing. I get to know my "real self" in this experience and most of all, I am working on what I love.

We can't stop the wave, but we can learn how to surf, right?

catching a glimpse of the Olympic torch

Been in deep thoughts in the past few days.  It is because my friend Eric, who is also an entrepreneur, made a comment about "successful" entrepreneur.  He said that "successful" entrepreneurs are the ones that have plenty financial support, especially when they mostly come from great families where they do not have to worry about putting meals on the table.  The purpose of starting a business is merely a hobby for them.  He named his friend who started a dog daycare business, received $500,000 seed money from family and able to enjoy what he loved to do without the stress. They have the right connections, know the right people, they don't have the same set of challenges and struggles as most of us have.  Is this true?

The Olympic Torch passed by my neighbourhood last Thursday.  It was an "once-in-a-lifetime" opportunity to catch a glimpse of it.  Are all the Olympic Torch bearer well known, well connected and / or come from rich families?  No.  Perhaps I don't pay attention much to who's who in the City or even in the country, perhaps I don't know all the names on the torch bearer list.  There were certainly some famous names of film directors, company's CEO's, athletes, news anchors and some public figures who able to make significant donations or contributions to the Winter Olympics; but there were also ordinary people, especially the unsung heros and heroines from some townships.  Through online application and nominations, one ordinary citizen could also become a torch bearer.  Is the opportunity equal among everyone?  I'd like to think that we all have chances, but whether it is a bigger or smaller probability, as long as the probability is more than zero, there is an opportunity.  If you don't take the chance, then the likelihood of "making it" is certainly zero.
